I really like this book, Egoscue Method of Health Through Motion by Pete Egoscue, because it gives some really effective exercises to help people with bad backs. You may well recognise some of the exercises from yoga and elsewhere, but some are unique to this book. Pete Egoscue recognises that bodies are not generally symmetrical or in alignment, and his exercise programme is designed to correct this. Egoscue recommends different exercises depending on how the body is out of alignment.
I came across this method some years ago when I was visiting the USA. While there, an old injury of my right inguinal ligament recurred. I decided to try some of the exercises, which took me all of ten minutes. Within two days I was pain-free. I was amazed.
I have used these exercises very successfully with clients. The most memorable case was a young girl who had been having physio for one year without success. Within one week of starting the exercises her problem had vanished.
