Choosing A Probiotic Supplement
Dr. Georges Mouton, recognised internationally for his scientific medical procedures in Functional Medicine and author of "Intestinal Ecosystem and Optimal Health" says “When choosing
a probiotic supplement, it is just as important to pay attention to the types (or strains) of friendly bacteria as to their number of billions. Different strains of friendly bacteria play different roles in supporting a healthy body. You can directly
boost immunity, improve digestive health and bowel regularity, as well as remedy problems like
diarrhoea,
bloating and thrush by carefully selecting a probiotic supplement containing specific strains of friendly bacteria.”
General guidelines in choosing a probiotic supplement:
i) Preferably shelf-stable (no need to refrigerate)
ii) Choose a probiotic with greater than 1 billion live micro-organisms per dose.
iii) Make sure that the number of billions of live micro-organisms are guaranteed until the best before date (as opposed to some manufacturers that state number of billions at time of manufacture).
iv) Choice of strains. Different probiotic strains have been studied for their different efficacies. Ask about which Probiotic products being stocked contain the specific strains your body needs to support your specific health condition or will promote the health benefits you are seeking.

v) Avoid yoghurt drinks which have large quantities of sugar and questionable probiotic survival rates.
vi) Choose a product from a company with a reputation / specialisation in probiotics. These products will have the relevant scientific research and documentation supporting probiotic studies on their:
- ability to resist gastric acidity and bile salts in the harsh stomach environment
- adherence and colonisation in the small and large intestines
- production of antimicrobial substances
- specific strain efficacies
vii) Consider choosing a probiotic formula that contains a prebiotic (food for probiotics to flourish)
If you do take
probiotics, there’s really no point in doing it half-heartedly. They need to be taken regularly everyday, or at least for a period of time, to replenish healthy levels of good bacteria that are lost from your body.
