More than half of drinkers think only binge drinking harms their health, but this is far from true. It is estimated that 10 million adults in England are drinking above the recommended limits? Even if you don’t binge drink or get drunk, you could still be at risk.
Regularly drinking above the recommended limits can not only cause liver disease, but is also related to breast cancer, throat cancer, mouth cancer, heart disease and stroke, along with other serious conditions.
Scientific evidence shows that:
- you could be three times more likely to have a stroke and three times more likely to get mouth cancer if you’re a man regularly drinking more than two pints of lager a day
- you are 50% more likely to get breast cancer and twice as likely to have high blood pressure, which could lead to a stroke or a heart attack, if you’re a woman regularly drinking two glasses of wine or more a day.
The British government recommended limits are:2 to
- 3 units a day for women (about two small glasses of wine)
- 3 to 4 units a day for men (about two pints of lager)
Helping Yourself To Control Your Alcohol Intake
Alcohol Concern (UK) says that most people feel less relaxed standing up, so drink more alcohol at parties and bars when they are standing up. So if
you want to drink less, sit down!
It takes the liver an hour to process one unit of alcohol, so help your liver by drinking alcohol slowly.
Remember when you've had a lot of alcohol, you may feel sexy, confident and attractive, but excess alcohol makes most people unattractive, loud, stupid and embarrassing.
Out for a long evening of drinking? Alternate alcohol and non-alcoholic drinks to keep yourself hydrated and reduce your alcohol intake.
