Emotional Realignment Therapy: Get rid of that old emotional baggage by Dr Karen Janes
Emotional Realignment Therapy (ERT) is a cutting edge treatment that began as an experiment by a creative and progressive energy healer; J. E. Honey, nearly ten years ago. He was motivated by his dissatisfaction with existing approaches to help a particular young woman move beyond her difficulties. He wanted to develop a therapy that enabled people to go straight to the core of their problems and avoid the need to discuss or analyse individual memories.
Talking about problems can provide useful insight but does not always lead to the sense of release or joy that is hoped for. Some memories may be too deeply buried to be accessed by conventional therapies or sometimes stored at a very young age before language was fully developed. ERT does not require definitions or descriptions of these experiences but simply enables the person to feel the emotions that come up. It therefore enables a freedom from past emotional experiences and behaviour patterns because it works with the pure energy of the stored emotion and realigns this, rather than the memory.
Emotional experiences cause blocks in the physical, energy or psychic body leading, amongst other things, to illness, despair, anxiety, lethargy, lack of motivation or simply a sense that things are not right. It is possible for the residual energy of emotional experiences to remain in the body for a lifetime causing ongoing problems. ERT helps people permanently remove this energy, freeing them from distress, apathy or unwanted behaviour.
What is involved?
ERT is not a talking therapy. It enables people to gently release emotional blocks at their own pace without the need to discuss or analyse their experiences. By releasing blockages the flow of energy in the body improves, allowing people to move on in a positive way. With ERT, clients can simply connect with each emotion and decide whether or not they are ready to let it go, whilst remaining in complete control of the process. ERT is the only therapy where the client is fully in control of which experiences they address, the pace of the session and when they decide they have done enough. What is released is permanently gone from the energy system and so benefits are felt as a direct result of which emotions were released in any one session.
ERT only works by the client choosing what they wish to do with each emotional block, for only they can know what they feel and how it affects them. This unique system was developed so that the practitioner cannot realign this emotional energy through their own choice or opinion: only the client can give permission for a block to be removed and realigned or left alone.
An ERT session
ERT is, at essence, a complete treatment. It works very well with other energy therapies but it does not require clients to return for repeated sessions. For many people one ERT session gives them the freedom they were looking for but some clients do decide to return at a later date to release things at the next or deeper level.
During a treatment you will be invited to lie face up on a couch. No clothing is removed, apart from the shoes, and there is minimal physical contact. There may be a maximum time limit agreed for the session and the client is then free to decide, within this time, how much they want to release and when they are ready to stop; this is completely their choice.
ERT practitioners may suggest that clients have at least one, or sometimes more, energy healing treatments, such as Reiki or Applied Energy Flow, before ERT to enable the client to prepare for the session and plan the optimum timing. It is also advisable to plan a follow up session to help rebalance the energy system and support the period of adjustment to the changes made.
The Benefits of ERT
ERT is particularly useful for those who feel they have an intellectual understanding of the issues in their life but have been unable to move on; for those who are unsure of the specifics of their problems; or for people who are unable to remember all the details of traumatic experiences. It has been described as ideal for those who ‘just want to get rid of it’.
ERT is invaluable for people who have had very traumatic experiences but is also incredibly beneficial for clearing out the effects of more common stressful or challenging life events, which everyone experiences from time to time. Many clients report feeling as though a weight has been lifted at the end of the session and for many people changes continue to become apparent as they experience different situations in the weeks and months to follow. ERT can enable people to make big or small changes in their lives but most people agree that it helps them to feel more themselves and less weighed down by their past.
