More Health Tips from Jane Thurnell-Read

I can understand why people like health tips. They're easy to understand and apply, so here are some more - some may be reminders about things you already know, but some hopefully will be new ideas and angles on being healthier.

Do Things Sitting Down!
Don't eat standing up - this is usually a sign you are rushing your food and not paying attention to what you are eating. Alcohol Concern says that most people feel less relaxed standing up, so they drink more alcohol at parties and bars when they are standing up.

Tooth Brushes
Powered toothbrushes with small round, oscillating heads have been proven to remove 20 to 40 per cent more plaque than manual toothbrushes. Mouth health is important to your general health and poor gum health has been linked to heart problems.

Paracetamol And Asthma
An international study found children treated with paracetamol in the first year of life had a 46 per cent increased risk of developing asthma by the age of seven. (European Respiratory Journal 2008)

Chronic Sinusitis
Researchers tested Manuka honey against 3 particularly nasty bacteria (MSSA, MRSA and PA). The honey were effective in killing the bacteria. Try taking manuka honey if you have chronic sinusitis. (University of Ottawa 2008 study)

Arsenic And Diabetes
Low-level arsenic exposure, possibly from drinking water, has been linked to Type 2 diabetes according to the Journal of the American Medical Association. (August 2008). Be on the safe side and use a water filter.

Exercise And Health
Unless you have significant joint problems, one single piece of advice will help to prevent or treat most malaises you can think of: exercise more than you are at the moment. (Simon Crompton the medical editor of the UK newspaper TheTimes)

Vitamin C Benefits For Weight Loss And Bone Loss
Making sure your intake of vitamin C is adequate can help you lose weight, and (for men) not lose bone. A study in 2005 from Arizona State University suggested that when vitamin C levels are low your body burns fat more slowly. Take a supplement or eat vitamin C rich food if you want to lose weight. A high intake of vitamin C may help reduce bone loss in elderly men (but not in women), according to a 2008 study. (Katherine L. Tucker, PH.D., Journal of Nutrition)

Fertility Warning
Using a hands-free device with a cell phone may affect your fertility if you keep your phone close to your testicles - in your pocket or clipped to your waist. (Fertility And Sterility Journal 2008)

Pistachio Nuts
Snacking on pistachio nuts may help to lower levels of so-called “bad” LDL cholesterol, suggest results of a study by researchers at Penn State University, USA.

Dieting Claims
Anything to do with dieting that sounds too good to be true - 99% of the time it is too good to be true. (Amanda Ursell, nutrition columnist for the UK newspaper The Times).

Winning And Losing
"I've never met a winner who hasn't learnt how to be a loser." Jack Nicklaus, golfer

Hate Housework?
If you hate housework, focus on how many calories you're burning and how you're getting a workout as you clean your house.

Arthritis
You're more likely to suffer from arthritis if you don't eat lots of fruit and vegetables. Use a juicer if you find eating them difficult.

Lutein
Lutein is an antioxidant found in green leafy vegetables, and has been shown to be particularly beneficial for our eyes.

Mint
Put the leaves in a bowl of hot water and inhale when you have a stuffed up nose.
