For the over 40 million Americans who suffer with allergies, the arrival of Spring invokes thoughts of prescription drugs and OTC medicines to help alleviate the symptoms of runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes, and scratchy throats due to seasonal allergies. For some people these symptoms are a yearlong struggle due to molds, dust mites, and animal dander as well. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, estimates that over 16 million office visits a year are attributed to allergic rhinitis (allergies), with costs totaling over $6 billion. The EPA reports that indoor air can be up to five to ten times worse than outside air. Experts say that anywhere from two to ten million dust mites live in our mattresses, and another two million live in our pillows. A six-year-old pillow can have one tenth of its weight from dust mites (live and dead), and mite feces. Dust mites feed on dead skin cells, which can be seen floating in the air whenever the sun’s rays shine through the windows of your home. Every time you fluff your pillow, or make your bed, an unhealthy cloud of feces, dust mite body parts and dead skin cells are released into your breathing space and allowed to circulate throughout your home.

Environmental allergy sufferers may now choose between pharmaceuticals, and an array of natural dietary supplements, which have been involved in new and promising scientific research. Natural remedies provide safe and effective relief from allergy symptoms, without all the unwanted adverse side effects of the pharmaceuticals. Here are some of my personal favorites:

Aller-7

A combination of seven Ayurvedic herbs used for centuries in India, has been researched for over a decade. Each person took 2600mg of OptiMSM for 30 days and was monitored every 7 days. By day 7, total upper respiratory symptoms were significantly reduced, and this continued through day 30. Lower respiratory symptoms improved by day 21 and continued to improve by day 30. Energy levels also significantly improved by day 14 and continued to improve through day 30. Other effective natural choices include: Stinging Nettles, Quercitin, Bromelain, Vit- C with bioflavanoids, and a wide assortment of Homeopathic remedies.
