Shingles is an infection of the nerves that supply the skin by a virus called herpes zoster. The result is a painful rash of blisters in the affected area or areas. The area infected can vary but is often one side of the trunk, or the neck and arm and sometimes even the eye. Initially the person feels that the area is very sensitive, and it gradually becomes more painful. Then, after about 5 days, the tell-tale blisters appear.
Herpes zoster causes chickenpox. Even after the child has recovered from the chickenpox small reservoirs of the virus can remain lying dormant in sensory nerves. The herpes zoster often comes back to life as shingles when the person is under stress and/or their immune system is compromised in some way. Older people are more likely to get shingles because their immune systems tend to be less efficient. Taking a probiotic formula specifically designed to support the immune system, and B complex vitamins for stress may reduce the likelihood of shingles emerging, and help the body to deal with it effectively if it is already present. The amino acid L-Lysine inhibits the growth of viruses and is effective for some people. Vitamin E can help nerve functioning and healing. Vitamin C is generally helpful for the immune system and at times of stress. St John's Wort, well-known as an effective treatment for depression and seasonal effective disorder(SAD), has anti-viral properties too. Echinacea often used in cough and cold prevention also has anti-viral properties.
Many people are exposed to the herpes viruses but not everyone succumbs. One common reason for this is that the system does not recognise the virus appropriately and so does not know how to deal with it. It lacks information at a subtle energy level. In health kinesiology there is a procedure called Symbiotic Energy Transformation (SET) which can teach the body to recognise the virus and deal with it. The HK practitioner puts a sample of the virus (either homeopathic or obtained from a blister) on a specific acupuncture point on the client’s body and then rebalances the system either by touching a sequence of acupuncture points or some equivalent method. This simple procedure takes less than an hour and usually results in the symptoms clearing up much more quickly and repeat attacks becoming less frequent or non-existent. The health kinesiology practitioner may also use other techniques or nutritional supplements to strengthen the immune system and deal with the stress associated with this painful condition.
