20 Exercise Tips by Jane Thurnell-Read
Experts are urging us to walk more - to take 10,000 steps a day. Here's some tips from the UK Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists on how you can incorporate this into your daily life.
- Get off your train or bus a stop early and walk the rest of the way
- Take a walk in your lunch hour, and explore the neighbourhood
- Walk the dog
- Use the stairs instead of the lift/elevator
- Park further away from the shops/stores
- Don’t use the car for short trips – walk instead
- Get up to change the TV channel (hide the remote)
- Put on some lively music while you clean your house and dance while you’re dusting!
- Walk over to visit a friend, instead of driving
- Get outside to mow the lawn or do some weeding
- Walk, run and play actively with your children or grandchildren
- Walk up escalators
- Walk your child to school
- Window shop
- Plan a walking meeting
- Take a walking break instead of a coffee break at work
- Take up dancing — ballroom, clogging, you name it. Most of us love music, and it’s fun!
- Take a walk after dinner
- Don’t phone or email your office colleagues; walk over to see them whenever possible
- Walk around while you are on the phone. You can add about 100 steps in a five-minute conversation
If you're not used to taking any exercise at all, make some of these changes - you might get to like it.
You never know you might get fit enought to want to walk a marathon.
